This bloggers response to a recent article in the Bee calling for massive cuts in spending:
California citizens caused this mess as much as those in power. Millions bought homes they could not afford and often not to live in, just for turning a profit. When they could not pay, the banks who should not have made the loans in the first place went bust.
In any California election the candidate that receives voter support promises lower crime, better schools, good roads, and improved health care. Very few of the same voters want to pay for the things they think are so important.
In both of the above examples you can’t have what you are unwilling or unable to pay for. Not if you want to balance a budget. There is no free highway, education, public safety, or anything else. Citizens of California need to stop blaming everyone except themselves and pay for their lunch.
The State of California has a huge budget deficit. Years of spending above inflation and population increases has turned what could have been a surplus into huge deficit. Both the State and the union representing State workers, SEIU1000 has asked for suggestions in reducing the deficit. Here is what I submitted on the unions web site:
The State of Utah went to a 4 day work week for all State offices. This is saving the State millions and has environmental benefits. Offices are not using heat or air and employees are not driving in to work every Friday. Citizens have adjusted to doing business with the State four days a week. Employees enjoy spending the extra time with their families.
No Furloughs, No Layoffs, and BIG SAVINGS.
There are many alternatives to reducing a State budget deficit that do not require killing an economy trying to recover.
You can find many articles noting the benefits to the State by doing a Google search with “Utah State Employees 4 Day Work Week”.
The flu is always a serious thing. We do not want to panic in regards to the H1N1 flu. Being informed is the key! First of all you do not get this flu from eating pork or from being exposed to pigs. There is no need to stop eating pork and pigs should not be killed to prevent the spread of H1N1. People spread this virus and there is NO need to take action against these four legged creatures. Facts is what we need to base our actions on. Below are some links to sites that will give you factual information regarding H1N1.
