GOP Finds Perfect Spokesperson

This Week the Grand Old Party (GOP)  found their perfect spokesperson.  The Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford stepped up to the plate and hit a home-run.

Most democrats and independents do not condone extra-marital affairs.  However, they do refrain from casting stones at those who are not perfect and make these mistakes.

The GOP should change it’s name to  Grand Old Hypocrites (GOH).  They will have no problems finding spokespersons.

Total Memory Failure

Do you remember: Almost 55% of voters decided to recall Gray Davis in favor of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Do you remember: Nearly 50% of California voters then went and elected Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Do you remember:   A large surplus due to booming home sales and and stock market?   State workers had to threaten to  strike in order to receive a 3.5% pay increase.  Remember?

Did the Governor ever demonstrate (not just say) that he supported public service or public servants in anyway?

What you voted for is what you get.

Total Memory Failure is being experienced by thousands in and around the Capital of California.

The Next Big Crisis-Labor Shortage!

Greed in the housing market, huge deficits by the Federal government, and States inability to balance their own budgets were factors leading to this recession.  Our economy would be booming if we had acted responsibly as consumers and if our elected officials had been equally responsible with their spending.

Instead of an economy hitting on all cylinders we are dealing with high unemployment.  Young people are unable to find work or face getting laid off.

This is a time  when we should be training young people to take over for the exodus of workers known as baby boomers.  The economy has slowed their exit from the workforce, but it is coming.  The next big crisis will be several years from now.  Don’t be surprised to see headlines that read “Baby Boomers are retiring in force and not enough young workers to fill their positions”.

Sounds crazy while we face unemployment in double digits.  The next big crisis is coming  and like this crisis the only thing that we may be able to count on is our elected officials being surprised and unprepared.

California Record Unemployment

No one seems to agree with my comments  posted in the Sacramento Bee in regards to California Hitting Record Unemployment.  Oh well  :)

Schwarzenegger. “There is no greater priority right now than to stimulate the economy, create jobs and get California back on the road to prosperity.”

How does laying off employees and cutting wages go along with this statement made by the governor and quoted in this Bee article? No one in their right mind takes a pay cut, listens to rhetoric about more cuts coming, and then goes shopping for a home, car, or anything else.

Failure to preserve a budget surplus for stimulating the economy in tough times has taken unemployment higher. Everyone spending less because of reduced incomes means higher unemployment too. Silly political statements solves nothing.

Arnold!, State Employees are Tax Payers and Citizens

Arnold, please! Your State employees ARE California citizens and tax payers.  Every pay cut and furlough is a tax increase! The rest of California needs to pay for services rendered too.

Sincerely,

Ex-Peace Corps Volunteer-State worker

P.S. During tough times it is good to talk with family.  Members in yours helped form the Peace Corps. They will also tell you dedicated public servants who often take pay cuts in order to serve deserve better than this.  Please seek their advise.

More of California Budget Mess

The below is my post to a Sacramento Bee story on cutting Cal Grants for students.  This is suppose to help remedy the budget crisis.  I understand why everyone is frustrated with the budget, but I get exasperated by all the posts that suggest that cutting spending on education is a valid solution to the problem.  Comments like, “I paid for my education so they should pay for theirs too”,  really irk me.  I paid for my education.  However, tuition at the time was less than $200.00 a semester.  Students today can pay that much for one book.  Here is my post on the Bee:

You all want 77,000 students to go without an education because the California Legislature and Governor turned a big surplus into a huge deficit? An educated workforce that earns a good wage is what will heal this economy and keep it competitive with other states and nations. Everyone is frustrated with the budget deficit. Let’s not take it out on young people who want to go to college and will eventually be hard working citizens and tax payers.
